Emerald

The emerald is one of a very select group of gemstones, along with diamonds, sapphires and rubies. Its popularity has even given its name to a shade of green. Do we not speak of an emerald sea, an emerald coast or emerald green eyes? It also gave its name to an emerald-cutting technique used to give stones a refined, translucent appearance. The oldest evidence of emeralds dates back to the second millennium BC, when they were used as currency in the city of Babylon. It is a rare stone that requires very specific geological conditions to crystallise. The secret of its formation has long intrigued specialists.
