Ametrine is a very special stone indeed, as it is thought to be composed of two varieties of quartz, amethyst and citrine, from which it has inherited its respective colours in a very distinct way: the violet sectors are located under the positive rhombohedral faces (r), and the yellow sectors under the negative rhombohedral faces (z), and can be separated clearly or more diffusely. Some very pure crystals show a magnificent gradation of shades.
